Missed cut results in amateur title

June 30th, 2008 by admin
Had Brownstown’s Chris Baker had his preference, he would not have been at Wolf Run Golf Club competing in the 108th Indiana Amateur Championship. The recent Iowa State graduate, All-American Honorable Mention and 2008 Iowa State Male Athlete of the Year, missed an opportunity last week to qualify for the Nationwide Tour’s Knoxville Open presented by Food City. Had he been successful in his qualifying attempt, his amateur career would have ended with his recent IGA Public Links Championship win. The other 155 competitors in the field would have been happy had that been the case.

Don Jellison: Letter to editor helps convince family it’s time to drive

June 30th, 2008 by admin
I hope you caught a letter to editor in the June 26 edition of the Daily Times. Entitled “Vacation by car, save $1,000,” it was written by Rich White, executive director of Car Care Council. I’ve never met Mr. White, nor had I previously heard of the Car Care Council. But, what Rich wrote certainly hit the nail on the head for me. I gave a copy to my wife and to three grand kids. About a month ago I suggested to Mattijane and to Drake, Shelby and Zack that this year our annual summer vacation should be

Commentary: Sorenstam flies out of Open in style with an Eagle

June 30th, 2008 by admin
EDINA, Minn. — Annika Sorenstam has insisted all along she’s not on a farewell tour, and doesn’t want people to think they have to cheer her just because it may be the last time they see her play. She didn’t win 72 golf tournaments by feeding off the crowd anyway. That always came from the inside, where a competitive fire burned that was never visible to anyone watching her coolly stalking the fairways while knocking challengers aside. So perhaps it was appropriate that in what she says was her last U.S. Open, Sorenstam did something to

Tyson Gay qualifies for Olympics

June 30th, 2008 by admin
EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Tyson Gay was a blur in blue, sprinting 100 meters faster than anyone ever has. His time of 9.68 seconds at the U.S. Olympic trials Sunday doesn’t count as a world record, because it was run with the help of a too-strong tailwind. Here’s what does matter: Gay qualified for his first Summer Games team and served notice he’s certainly someone to watch in Beijing. No one ever has covered 100 meters more quickly. The previous fastest time under any conditions was 9.69, run in 1996 by Obadele Thompson, who is married

Teen wins Women’s Open

June 30th, 2008 by admin
EDINA, Minn. (AP) — Two weeks away from her 20th birthday, Inbee Park became the youngest winner of the U.S. Women’s Open on Sunday by closing with a 2-under 71 as everyone around her faded away at Interlachen. Park played nearly flawless golf over the final 10 holes, pulling away with three clutch putts and taking a four-shot lead to the final hole. She finished with a tap-in birdie, and some fellow South Korean players doused her with beer. The victory came 10 years after Park took up the game, inspired by watching Se Ri Pak

Two legendary blues/rock acts took the Verizon Wireless Music Center stage Saturday night, providing an entertainment outlet for classic rock and soft rock fans. Dressed in all black, with black curtains covering the stage and backdrop, Cocker’s simple setup allowed the crowd to focus on his gritty
