Everyone on the Guerin team got into the act, but the Dolans were special. In the sixth inning, as Oak Hill rallied to within

Don Jellison: Noblesville-Carmel rivalry still alive, just ask Wides, Vogt

May 29th, 2008 by admin
This one will get me in trouble. I know. Been there; done that. The Indiana High School Athletic Association, which spends lots of effort and money promoting good sportsmanship, likely will ban me from the press box when the state baseball tourney is held at Victory Field. That is, by far, my favorite state tourney. Member schools, local schools here in Hamilton County, also heavily promote good sportsmanship. School folks won’t like this column. Yes, been there, done that. Don’t get the wrong idea. I’m not knocking good sportsmanship from our high school coaches, athletes, fans

Commentary: Image is everything for Kobe Bryant

May 29th, 2008 by admin
Kobe Bryant was being humble, like a proper superstar should. It’s good for the image, something Barry Bonds never figured out and likely regrets now that his playing days are over. Game 4 against the San Antonio Spurs had ended just moments before, and Bryant was now on national television telling everyone how it was his mistake late in the game that almost cost the Los Angeles Lakers a playoff win. Never mind that it was Bryant who actually won the game for the Lakers. It’s all about image building, and there’s nothing that plays better

May 29th, 2008 by admin
BOSTON (AP) — Ray Allen raised his arms to fire up the Boston crowd with 4.5 seconds left. The struggling Celtics sharpshooter already had excited the fans by finding his shooting touch Wednesday night and helping Boston move one win away from its first NBA finals in 21 years. “My feeling now is no different from if I had scored 10 points and we still won the game,” said Allen, who scored 29 in the 106-102 win over the Pistons. “It’s a great feeling because (of) the joy on everybody’s face.” The Celtics lead

NHL Stanley Cup: Penguins topple Wings, trail 2-1

May 29th, 2008 by admin
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Sidney Crosby is the Pittsburgh Penguins’ leader. Their best player. The franchise figurehead. A player who brings out the best in those who surround him, even if the 20-year-old is half the age of some. On a night that effectively could have ended the Penguins’ Stanley Cup run in every way except mathematically, Crosby showed another side to his teammates: Sidney Crosby, the loner. In the Penguins’ dressing room before their absolutely must-win 3-2 victory over Detroit in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup finals on Wednesday night, Crosby was unusually pensive and

Pro Golf: With no Tiger, all in contention

May 29th, 2008 by admin
DUBLIN, Ohio (AP) — Sergio Garcia’s best shot at winning the Memorial Tournament came in 2001 when he tied for second. Reminded that he finished a distant seven shots behind Tiger Woods, Garcia laughed and said, “It wasn’t a very good chance then, was it?” Woods, who has won the Memorial three times and has finished in the top five three more, won’t be around this week at Muirfield Village. That leaves a huge opening for the prospective contenders at the tournament that Jack Nicklaus founded. While Woods recovers from knee surgery at his

Because of these revelations, most experts now consider reading aloud daily to your child essential. So, if you want your child to develop strong literacy skills, read to them for at least 20 minutes each day, no matter how old they are. The “Read Alouds Too Good to Miss Program,” sponsored by the Association for Indiana Media Educators, exists to promote a love for reading and books in Indiana students. Each year since 1999, a committee comprised of members of the
