Uptown Cafe could reopen this summer

May 9th, 2008 by William Fouts
It won’t be long before the iconic neon signs marking a Noblesville landmark will be back on and beckoning diners to stop in. Jay and Anne Merrell purchased the Uptown Café building from Gordon Breakey, closing on the deal Monday. Merrell confirmed the purchase Friday, saying he plans to lease the restaurant to a tenant who will keep the Uptown name and reopen the restaurant, hopefully by mid-summer. “I kind of missed the place,” Merrell said. “It seems like it’s a good way to help keep a little bit of Noblesville history and tradition alive.” It’s the first business building

Museum of Appalachia: Home of the thieving pig pie safe

May 9th, 2008 by admin
CLINTON, Tenn. – It’s known as the thieving pig pie safe. Named for the thieving pig of Wartburg, Tenn. It was near the end of the 19th century, and the old hotel owner – either the old hotel or old owner or both – would store butter in the pie safe. There were no fence laws in town, so a “big old sow hog” would run loose, eating scraps and garbage. The nose on the big old sow hog, soon to become legendary, would lead her to the old hotel. Smart as a … well, …

Rev. Eric Brotheridge: What is in a number: 71.17?

May 9th, 2008 by admin
I must confess that there are a number of faith traditions and sacred rituals that I know absolutely nothing about. While this column pertains to issues of faith and religion, it by no means purports to be a “know-it-all” column amounting to universal knowledge. I will gladly leave that kind of figuring to the mathematicians; although I finally managed to get an “A” in math in a college Calculus class. That was all the math I was required to take to satisfy graduation requirements, so I did not take any more. (Who says you don’t learn anything in college?)

Darla Kinney Scoles: Paying tribute to ‘Mrs. Far-Above-Rubies’

May 9th, 2008 by admin
This week, as I prepared to compile a column of submitted material devoted to mothers, with the timely joy of having my own mother here visiting from out of state, my husband’s mother passed away quietly in Florida. In light of this event, the following column – submitted by Sarah Martin of Sheridan Wesleyan Church – is dedicated to the memory of Mary Elizabeth Scoles, as well as “Mrs. Far-Above-Rubies.” No one should have to bury their mother on Mother’s Day, and yet, when I finished this column on Thursday, I packed, flew to Florida and joined my husband Ron

Prosecutor: Boy who shot sister played with gun before

May 9th, 2008 by admin
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A prosecutor says a 5-year-old boy who accidentally shot and killed his younger sister with his father’s semiautomatic handgun had fired the gun before. Marion County Prosecutor Carl Brizzi says 26-year-old James Michael Booher should have been more careful in keeping the gun away from his son. He says that is true especially since the boy had taken the gun from atop a refrigerator and shot a bullet into a kitchen cabinet eight months ago. Four-year-old Makayla Booher was shot in the head Sunday morning. Police say her brother had taken the gun
